Toxic Positivity

Sometimes, I just want to be in a bad mood and not hear how others have it much much worse than me.

How much does it suck when you tell you someone about an issue you’re having and they respond with “Well people are starving,” or some shit like that.

It’s a huge life-suck. At least for me it is. I know that for some optimists it’s all about perspective and perspective makes it all feel better. By thinking of someone else’s woes, you somehow forget your own?

Wrong.

Just because others have it worse, doesn’t mean your problems suddenly disappear.

The biggest issue with comparing your problems to those that are bigger than you, is that you push your feelings down and forget about them — waiting for a trigger to bring them back up again. Instead of taking care of it right away.

Toxic Positivity can also be defined as privilege and I’ve had this argument many times. Only a truly privileged person will take a look at someone’s woes and tell them, “someone else has it worse.” This is simply because they don’t have the same problems or very few that they have to actually deal with.

What we really want is empathy
