Never Believe Their Words
I never make a promise I can’t keep. Says the man who can’t keep a promise.
It was constant disappointment. He always uttered the phrase “I’m a man of my word babylove.” Me, being young and naive took his promise incompetence as him being young and naive.
Nobody has ever kept their words anyway. I knew from the very start that promises were just that, promises. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything will come of it. I know how cynical that sounds but hear me out.
Promise Keeping
There’s this concept that when someone tells you they’re going to do something that you leave it at that. But that’s not fully fact. You have to also hold them accountable.
When you schedule a date you don’t just schedule the date a week ahead of time and hope that everyone remembers and shows up — no — you check in the day before or the day of too. A quick check in of “Hey are we still on?” or “I can’t wait to see you.” This is accountability.
Believe Their Actions
When someone makes a promise to you. Their actions are what gets you to believe them.
My father promised he would go to every event. But he failed to make it to the bigger events. He never saw me off to prom, didn’t make it to my most promising recitals. He even missed my college signing day.
