Doomed Are the Pretty Girls

In a world where filters and ring lights are almost now necessary, a man questions my validity of a photo I posted on instagram while staring at me and I was SHOOK.

We were sitting on his couch watching reality T.V. and when as he scrolled through instagram and saw my most recent selfie drop and looks at me and says “this looks nothing like you.”

I looked at him like he was crazy, because the caption under my photo literally says, No filter, No Makeup, just me & the sun. I had purposefully showed my skin, flaws and all with nothing inhibiting my natural self and he didn’t believe it was me. His house was dark and moody. I was wearing a beanie and it was 10 at night. I sat with my oversized t-shirt and leggings and listened to him critique my filter-less photo on how he hates when women use filters.

Now, normally, I don’t owe men an explanation. But this time I pull my phone out and show him the live photo as living proof I didn’t do any editing. God I love iPhones sometimes. He watched my live photo on a loop and then says with the straightest face to me:

This is how men get caught up, women know too much about lighting.

I almost lost my mind. In a world where instagram models and influencers are so loud and outside why do men shame the pretty girls too?
